Andropogon scoparius -- Little Bluestem is an erect, light bluegreen, tufted grass (reddish-tan in fall) with spikelets in narrow terminal clusters on slender stems that intermingle with the leaves. Little Bluestem reaches a height of 1 1/2-4 1/2'. The leaf blades are 10" long, 1 1/2" wide. This bunchgrass, gets its name from the bluish color of the stem bases in the spring. Its most striking is the plant's reddish-tan color in fall, persisting through winter snows. Inflorescences appear between August-October. |
